A pilonidal cyst is a round sac of tissue containing air or fluid. This common type of cyst is found in the buttock crease and is usually caused by a skin infection. Pilonidal cysts are a common condition, with over 70,000 cases reported in the United States each year. However, many people are too embarrassed to discuss it, even with their healthcare providers. Pilonidal cysts can be painful and must be treated. Pilonidal cysts can be a one-time (acute) problem or chronic (reoccurring). Chronic pilonidal cysts, if left untreated, can lead to abscesses (swollen pockets of infection) and sinus cavities (empty spaces underneath the skin). A pilonidal cyst (also known as pilonidal cyst disease, intergluteal pilonidal disease, or pilonidal sinus) is a skin condition that occurs in the buttock crease, ranging from the tailbone to the anus. A pilonidal cyst can be excruciatingly painful, particularly when sitting. These cysts are typically caused by a skin infection, and they frequently contain ingrown hairs on the inside. Because pilonidal cysts are more common in people who sit a lot, they were dubbed Jeep driver's disease during WWII.
