Infrared Coagulation of Hemorrhoids (IRC) uses infrared light as a heat source to cut off blood supply to internal hemorrhoids, causing vessel coagulation and hemorrhoid shrinkage. Overall, IRC is a safe and quick procedure, and most patients are able to resume their normal routine the following day. You may experience side effects as with any procedure or treatment. These include bleeding, infection, pain, swelling, and urination difficulty. In some cases, your hemorrhoid may become larger and filled with blood clots (thrombosed hemorrhoid), necessitating additional treatment. To prepare for your Infrared Coagulation procedure, you will be given specific instructions. Your doctor may recommend an enema to cleanse the rectum prior to your procedure. You will not be required to restrict your diet prior to the procedure. The IRC procedure usually takes about ten minutes. A probe is placed above hemorrhoid during the procedure. Light bursts are used to cause coagulation of the vessels and eventual shrinkage of the hemorrhoids. As the infrared light is applied, you may feel warmth in the rectal area. Throughout the procedure, you should feel only minor discomfort. The warm sensation should start to fade after your procedure. You may feel some discomfort in the rectal area for up to 10 days after the procedure. Bleeding or spotting are examples of symptoms. You can resume your normal activities, but avoid strenuous exercise.
