A pilonidal cyst is a round tissue sac that contains air or fluid. This type of cyst is commonly found in the buttock crease and is typically caused by a skin infection. Many people, however, are too embarrassed to discuss it, even with their healthcare providers. Pilonidal cysts are uncomfortable and must be treated. Pilonidal cysts can be a one-time (acute) or chronic problem (reoccurring). If left untreated, chronic pilonidal cysts can lead to abscesses (swollen pockets of infection) and sinus cavities (empty spaces underneath the skin). A pilonidal cyst is a skin condition that occurs in the buttock crease, ranging from the tailbone to the anus. A pilonidal cyst can be excruciatingly painful, particularly when sitting. These cysts are frequently caused by a skin infection and have ingrown hairs on the inside.
