IRC uses infrared light as a heat source to cut off blood supply to internal hemorrhoids, resulting in vessel coagulation and hemorrhoid shrinkage. Overall, IRC is a safe and quick procedure, and most patients can resume their normal routine the next day. As with any procedure or treatment, you may experience side effects. These include bleeding, infection, pain, swelling, and difficulty urinating. Your hemorrhoid may become larger and filled with blood clots in some cases (thrombosed hemorrhoid), necessitating additional treatment. You will be given specific instructions to help you prepare for your Infrared Coagulation procedure. Before your procedure, your doctor may recommend an enema to cleanse the rectum. There will be no need for you to restrict your diet prior to the procedure. The IRC procedure typically takes ten minutes. During the procedure, a probe is placed above hemorrhoid. Light bursts are used to cause vessel coagulation and, eventually, hemorrhoid shrinkage. You may feel warmth in the rectal area as the infrared light is applied. You should feel only minor discomfort throughout the procedure. After your procedure, the warm sensation should begin to fade. You may experience discomfort in the rectal area for up to ten days following the procedure. Symptoms include bleeding and spotting. Normal activities can be resumed, but strenuous exercise should be avoided.
