A pilonidal sinus (PNS) is a small skin hole or tunnel. It may become clogged with fluid or pus, resulting in the formation of a cyst or abscess. It manifests itself in the cleft at the top of the buttocks. Hair, dirt, and debris are common components of a pilonidal cyst. It can cause severe pain and is frequently infected. If infected, it may ooze pus and blood and emit a foul odor. A PNS is a condition that primarily affects men but is also common in adolescents and young adults. It's also more common in people who spend a lot of time sitting, such as cab drivers. The exact cause of this condition is unknown, but it is thought to be a combination of changing hormones (because it occurs after puberty), hair growth, and friction from clothing or sitting for an extended period of time. Activities that cause friction, such as sitting, can cause the hair to burrow back under the skin. The body recognizes this hair as foreign and mounts an immune response against it, similar to how it would react to a splinter. This immune response causes the cyst to form around your hair. A person may have multiple sinuses that connect beneath the skin. If your case is diagnosed early on, you are not in severe pain, and there is no sign of inflammation, your doctor will most likely prescribe a broad-spectrum antibiotic. A broad-spectrum antibiotic is one that treats a wide variety of bacteria. It is critical to understand that this will not heal the sinus tract, but it will provide relief from the infection and discomfort. Your doctor will advise you to have a follow-up exam, remove hair or shave the affected area on a regular basis, and practice good hygiene.
