Haemorrhoids, also referred to as piles, are swollen veins in the lower anus and rectum. When these vessels stretch, their walls can become irritated. Although haemorrhoids are uncomfortable, they usually go away on their own. Lifestyle changes, such as eating more fibre and exercising, can help relieve symptoms and lower the risk of future haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids frequently cause anal bleeding, itching, irritation, discomfort, pain, or soreness around the anus, lumps and swelling in the anal region, and vein dilation or bulging, which may or may not be painful depending on where it occurs. Symptoms can be unpleasant or alarming, but they usually resolve themselves after a few days. Simple measures are usually sufficient to relieve symptoms while haemorrhoids heal on their own. In some cases, however, medication or surgery may be required.
