An anal fistula is a pipe that goes from within the anus (the hole in your body where solid waste is expelled) to somewhere in the skin surrounding it. At times, they can become clogged or blocked. Bacteria can then accumulate and form a swollen pocket of infected tissue and liquid. Doctors will refer to this as an abscess.
