IRC uses infrared radiation as a heat source to coagulate, or clot, the veins that feed blood to the haemorrhoids fast. A tiny probe is used to deliver a few short pulses of infrared light to a haemorrhoid without causing any discomfort. The swollen hemorrhoidal tissue shrinks and recedes as a result of the infrared coagulation.
